The themes of the ICH2P-2018 will cover topics ranging from the conversion of fossil fuels to the use of renewable energy sources and nuclear power for hydrogen production. Fossil fuel conversion includes processes for the gasification of coal and biomass, thermochemical systems such as steam-methane reforming, and photochemical systems. The electricity produced from renewable energy sources, or nuclear power, could be used to generate hydrogen by the electrolysis of water, and the development of these technologies will be included.

ICH2P-2018 will cover broad areas that extend beyond technical areas, to policy making, hydrogen infrastructure development, environmental concerns, regulatory actions, standards development, safety, storage, commercialization, education, training, and so forth.
